April marks our forth month living here in Melbourne. Living is such a great way to experience so much more of a culture than vacationing ever does.
Just finishing our Great Ocean Roadtrip at the end of March, April was a little less active but more family based. Missing Easter back home meant multiple Skype sessions with friends & family. Lucky for us, we’ve been welcomed in by a great family here & thoroughly enjoying all the events & great food that comes with it.
This Easter marked my first Greek Easter celebration, but hopefully not the last. There was a great mediterranean feast & our plates were never empty. The strangest tradition was the Easter egg hunt which was more like a chocolate pelting. You stand in the middle of a field & fight for the chocolates as they get thrown into the crowd. Out of the four of us girls (extended cousins of Dana included; Nat & Mel), I got the most chocolates.
On our own time, we headed out to some of the comedy festival shows in Fed Square. The girl in pink with hoola hoops is actually a Canadian performer; small world! The street performers in Melbourne are definitely an interesting variety & worth wandering around town to see. These acts were brought in, but I caught them performing on their own time as well. Very entertaining.
The end of this month has varied from short wearing weather to jacket weather each day. Lucky for us, we headed down to the sea baths in St. Kilda at a perfect time. Had a few ciders by the water & got another chance to watch the penguins find their homes again.
If you didn’t know One Direction was in Australia this month, you’re not in tuned with the teen girl crush group of the moment. Not fan-crazed ourselves, we did get a good reminder of what it was like being in high school again as we acted as chaperones to Natalie & friends. We ran all over town, headed to Crown, & sat outside the hotel waiting & waiting & waiting. Seeing hundreds of girls waiting for who knows how long dancing & screaming was fine to see; it was the old man that knew more than any teen girl that was creepy. We never saw the boys, but at least we saw the fandom.
