Most people know that I’m not a follower of sports. I’m not anywhere near being a big Canadian hockey fan & most “sports talk” goes right over my head. I’d rather be doing something on the artsy end of the scale but being in Melbourne at the perfect time to catch the Australian Open, I decided to give it a chance & make a day out of it.
Even with Dana following a few sports back home, neither of us had ever followed tennis. The only thing I know about tennis is that Matthew Perry used to be Canadian tennis player before he was in television. He even played a tennis player in Beverly Hills, 90210 before starring on Friends.
With $24 ground tickets we gave it a go & wandered around. Not being able to get into the sold out matches we perused around the courts & caught a few junior games. The most entertaining part was watching the Ball Kids run around handing towels, water, & catching tennis balls on the field between each play. We named them Runners (before we knew the “official terminology”) & probably laughed a little too much watching how attentive they were. We enjoyed the atmosphere & definitely got out moneys worth with freebies.
In the evening, we settled on the grounds to watch the Men’s Semifinals with hundreds of others. It was at least two hours in when we figured we would head out & try to catch the rest of the game in the comfort of a tv & couch back where we were crashing. Talk about perfect timing! Walking by the stadium to exit we crossed paths with a family on their way out who offered us their tickets! Next thing we know we’re running inside finding our 7th row seats to watch the Semifinals live. Even though I’m no where near close to being a sports fan, I got a little giddy once we were inside.
Now I can say I was there to watch the Australian Open 2012 Men’s Champion win his semifinal match. Pretty cool.
